Can you drive for Uber without owning a car?

Yes. Uber offers rentals through approved partners in its Vehicle Marketplace, and those cars are added to your Uber profile automatically once you meet its other requirements. Uber says you can drive a car you don't own if you have the owner's permission and you're listed as an insured driver on its policy.

Is renting cheaper than buying a car for Uber?

It depends on how long and how much you drive. AAA's 2026 study puts the average cost of owning a new car at $12,863 a year at 15,000 miles, about $247 a week (our math, as an illustration). Renting avoids a down payment and long-term loan, but weekly costs add up over time.

Tips for getting started without a car

The easier way: rent with Swift Ride

If you'd rather skip comparing partners and paperwork, Swift Ride rents rideshare-ready cars to gig drivers, with Atlanta-area pickup. Check swiftride.net for current locations and availability.

Every Swift Ride rental is fully managed:

  • Full maintenance included, with no out-of-pocket repairs or downtime
  • Regular inspections and service
  • Free tire replacements
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Commercial insurance included. Ask us for your proof-of-insurance document.
  • No long-term contracts

Our Uber car rental page also lists no credit check, unlimited mileage and virtual key access, so your phone unlocks the car. To start, you put down a refundable deposit, per How It Works.

What you'll need, per our Atlanta page: a driver's license at least 1 year old, proof of insurance history, and approval from your gig platform.

The honest fine print: renting from us doesn't change platform rules. Uber's UberXL rules exclude rental vehicles, so check the rules for the ride type you want before you rent.
