Can You Use a Rental Car for DoorDash? What Dashers Need to Know

You want to dash for DoorDash, but you don't have a car, or the one you have isn't reliable enough for daily deliveries. Good news: DoorDash is much more flexible about cars than rideshare apps are. Your license, insurance, and rental agreement still have to line up, though. Here are your real options, what DoorDash requires, and the easier route if you want a car ready to go.

Can you use a rental car for DoorDash?

DoorDash doesn't set make, model, or year requirements for cars, so a rental can work. You still need a valid driver's license, auto insurance that meets your state's minimums, vehicle registration, and to pass ID verification and a background check. Also confirm your rental agreement allows delivery use.

What are your options for a car to DoorDash with?

You can dash in your own car, a car you're insured to drive, a standard rental if the agreement allows delivery, or a car from a gig rental company like Swift Ride. Where available, DoorDash also offers bike and e-bike dash types. Each option has different costs and insurance questions.

  • Your own car: simplest, but delivery miles add wear, and repairs are on you.
  • A car you're insured to drive: DoorDash requires insurance that meets your state's minimums. (DoorDash)
  • A standard rental: check that the agreement allows delivery use.
  • A gig rental from Swift Ride: made for delivery and rideshare, with insurance and maintenance included, per our site.
  • Bike or e-bike: available in some markets.

What are DoorDash's car requirements?

DoorDash says there are no specific car requirements. There's no age limit on your car, and two-door cars are fine. To sign up with a car, you need to meet your state's minimum age, hold a valid U.S. license, have a Social Security number, insurance, registration, and a compatible smartphone.

How old do you have to be to DoorDash in Georgia?

DoorDash lists a minimum age of 19 for new Dashers in Georgia. That's different from rideshare: Uber lists 23 as Georgia's minimum rideshare driver age. So delivery can be a way to start earning if you're under the rideshare age limits.

What insurance do you need to DoorDash in a rental car?

You need auto insurance that meets Georgia's minimums and covers you while dashing. Georgia's minimum liability limits are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident for bodily injury, plus $25,000 for property damage. DoorDash says that if you don't keep your own insurance, its coverage may not apply.

When you rent, ask the rental company:

  • Does the insurance included with my rental cover delivery work?
  • What documents can I upload to DoorDash to show coverage?
  • What's my deductible if the car is damaged during a delivery?

Does DoorDash insurance cover your rental car?

Not for damage to the car itself. In Georgia, DoorDash provides third-party auto liability coverage only during the "Delivery Service" period, from when you accept an order until it's delivered, unassigned, or canceled. DoorDash says damage to a Dasher's own vehicle is the Dasher's responsibility.

  • Online but no order accepted: your own auto insurance is primary.
  • During an active delivery: DoorDash's help center says its commercial auto policy covers up to $1,000,000 in bodily injury and/or property damage to third parties. (DoorDash Help)
  • Damage to your car: handled by your own insurance (or the rental's coverage), not DoorDash.
  • Injuries to you: DoorDash says U.S. Dashers may be eligible for occupational accident coverage while making a delivery.

Tips for dashing in a rental car

  1. Read the rental agreement for any limits on delivery, commercial use, or mileage.
  2. Pick for city fuel economy. DoorDash notes dashing happens in short hops around town. Our best cars for Uber and delivery in 2026 post compares EPA city MPG.
  3. Protect the interior. An insulated bag and a drink carrier help prevent spills, and DoorDash lists both among gear Dashers often use.
  4. Mount your phone. DoorDash reminds Dashers to follow distracted-driving laws.
  5. Photograph the car at pickup and return.
  6. Track your miles for taxes. See our 2026 tax checklist.

Don't have a car at all?

DoorDash says you can also dash on bikes, e-bikes, scooters, or mopeds where those dash types are available, and bikes and e-bikes don't require a driver's license in many states. Check Dash Type in your app settings. (DoorDash) For more paths, read how to start driving for Uber without owning a car.
